GS1 Digital Link and DPP: How They Work Together

Every Digital Product Passport needs a way to connect the physical product to its digital data. GS1 Digital Link is the most widely used standard for this connection, and one of five product identifier schemes the harmonised standard EN 18219 recognises. If your products already carry GTINs, it is the natural choice, and understanding it is essential.

What is GS1 Digital Link?

GS1 Digital Link is a standard that embeds product identification data into a web URL. Instead of a traditional barcode that encodes a number only machines can interpret, a GS1 Digital Link creates a URL that is both machine-readable and human-accessible.

The standard format:

https://domain/01/{GTIN}/21/{serial}

Where:

  • /01/ identifies the GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) — the standard product identifier used worldwide
  • /21/ identifies the serial number — unique to an individual product unit
  • The domain can be brand-specific (e.g., brand.dpp.blippa.com)

An Example

For a textile product with GTIN 09506000134352 (GS1's own example number) and serial number ABC001:

https://brand.dpp.blippa.com/01/09506000134352/21/ABC001

Scanning this QR code takes you directly to the product's Digital Product Passport.

Why GS1 Digital Link (and Not Just Any URL)

This is a common question, and the answer matters: a QR code that only points at a web page does not meet DPP requirements. ESPR Article 10(1)(a) requires a persistent unique product identifier. GS1 Digital Link is the most common way to provide one, for these reasons.

Standardized Identification

GS1 Digital Link embeds the GTIN — the same product identifier already used in barcodes on virtually every consumer product worldwide. This means the DPP QR code is not just a web link; it carries structured product identification data that supply chain systems, customs authorities, and the EU DPP Registry can parse automatically.

Machine-Readable Structure

When a customs officer scans a DPP QR code, their system can extract the GTIN and serial number directly from the URL structure. It does not need to load a web page or call an API — the identification is in the URL itself.

Resolver Architecture

GS1 Digital Link supports content negotiation. The same URL can return:

  • An HTML product page for consumers scanning with a phone
  • JSON-LD structured data for machines and applications
  • Links to related resources, such as instructions or certificates, through GS1 link types

This is fundamentally different from a static QR code that just points to one web page.

Interoperability

Because every GS1 Digital Link uses the same URL structure, systems across the EU can work together. A recycling facility in Germany can scan a product made in Portugal and instantly access standardized data — no proprietary app needed, no platform lock-in.

GS1 Digital Link URL Structure in Detail

The full GS1 Digital Link specification supports multiple application identifiers. For DPP purposes, the most important ones are:

AI Code Purpose Example
/01/ GTIN (product type) /01/09506000134352
/21/ Serial number (individual unit) /21/ABC001
/10/ Batch/lot number /10/BATCH2026Q1
/22/ Consumer product variant /22/RED-XL

Batch vs. Serial Level

For a batch-level DPP (one passport per production batch):

https://brand.dpp.blippa.com/01/09506000134352/10/BATCH2026Q1

For a serial-level DPP (one passport per individual unit):

https://brand.dpp.blippa.com/01/09506000134352/21/ABC001

The choice between batch and serial depends on your product category and business needs. Textile products, for example, often start with batch-level DPPs for basic items and serial-level for premium lines.

The QR Code Implementation

GS1 Digital Link URLs are encoded into QR codes placed on the product. Key technical considerations:

QR Code Version and Error Correction

A typical GS1 Digital Link URL is 50-80 characters, which fits comfortably in a QR code Version 4-6. Use error correction level M (15%) or Q (25%) for products that may be scanned in challenging conditions (warehouse lighting, worn packaging).

Minimum Size

QR codes must be large enough to scan reliably. For care labels, the minimum recommended size is 10x10mm. For packaging, 15x15mm or larger. Test with multiple devices before committing to a size.

Brand Domain

The domain in a GS1 Digital Link can be your own brand domain (via CNAME), which maintains brand consistency:

trace.yourbrand.com/01/{GTIN}/21/{serial}

This is a significant advantage over using a generic platform URL. Consumers see your brand domain, not a third-party service.

GS1 Digital Link and the EU DPP Registry

The EU DPP Registry, launching July 19, 2026, stores each product's unique identifiers — and, for imports, the commodity code — not the passport data. It is not tied to GS1: the identifier can be a GS1 Digital Link or any other scheme EN 18219 recognises. Access is for the Commission, national authorities, customs and verified operators (ESPR Article 13; Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1778). Update, October 2026: the registry went live on 20 July 2026.

This means your DPP platform must:

  1. Generate valid GS1 Digital Link URLs
  2. Resolve those URLs to passport data
  3. Upload the identifiers to the EU DPP Registry once a delegated act requires it
  4. Maintain URL availability throughout the product's lifecycle

URL stability is critical. If your DPP URLs break because you switch platforms or change domains, your products lose their passports. Choose infrastructure built for long-term reliability.

On-the-Fly DPP Generation

An advanced capability supported by GS1 Digital Link: on-the-fly DPP creation. When a consumer scans a QR code for a product that does not yet have an individual passport record, the system can generate one automatically based on the GTIN (product type data) combined with the serial or batch number.

This is particularly useful for:

  • Products with very high unit volumes (fast fashion, FMCG)
  • Products where individual passports are created at first scan rather than at manufacturing
  • Gradual DPP rollout across large product catalogs

DPP Agent supports on-the-fly DPP generation, creating the passport record at scan time using pre-configured product templates.

Getting Your GTIN

If you do not already have GTINs for your products, you need to obtain them from a GS1 member organization. In most European countries, this means:

  1. Join your national GS1 organization (e.g., GS1 Sweden, GS1 Germany)
  2. Obtain a GS1 Company Prefix
  3. Assign GTINs to your products
  4. Register your products in the GS1 registry

If you already use EAN barcodes on your products, you already have GTINs — the EAN-13 number on your barcode IS a GTIN. You are ahead of the game.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using generic QR codes. A QR code pointing to yourbrand.com/product/123 is not a GS1 Digital Link. Supply chain systems that expect a GTIN will not parse it, and it only meets ESPR requirements if it is a persistent, globally unique identifier under one of the schemes EN 18219 recognises — not a page address that changes with the next shop redesign.

Printing QR codes without testing. Always scan-test QR codes at the actual printed size, on the actual material (care label fabric, packaging cardboard), with multiple devices before production.

Ignoring URL persistence. Your GS1 Digital Link URLs must remain functional for the product's entire lifecycle — potentially decades for durable goods. Use infrastructure designed for permanence.

Forgetting resolver configuration. A GS1 Digital Link URL needs a resolver that directs different types of requests to the right destination. Without proper resolver setup, the URL is just a broken link.
