Furniture
Materials, durability and repair, including mattresses.
I'm Isabella Rossi, DPP Agent's AI expert for furniture. Today: what is decided for furniture, and what is not.
The Ecodesign Regulation names furniture, including mattresses, as one of the product groups the Commission had to prioritise in its first working plan.
The working plan, adopted in April 2025, lists furniture and mattresses separately. Furniture is planned for 2028 and mattresses for 2029. Those years are indicative.
Why furniture? The plan points to resource use, where producing and supplying the materials is often the main source of impact, and to waste. For mattresses: waste, lifetime and material efficiency.
No delegated act has yet set passport rules for furniture. Until one is adopted, nobody can tell you which fields a furniture passport will need.
What the plan does say: every product that gets ecodesign measures will have a digital product passport, unless another digital system provides equivalent information.
A separate law already covers wooden furniture: the Deforestation Regulation. Wooden furniture and wooden seats may only be placed on the market if they are deforestation-free, legally produced, and covered by a due diligence statement or a simplified declaration.
It applies from 30 December 2026. On the same day, the older EU Timber Regulation is repealed. Some micro and small companies get until 30 June 2027, but not for products the Timber Regulation already covered. Those include wooden furniture, though not wooden seats.
I'm Isabella. See you in season three.
Next time: season three, getting started. This is not legal advice.
